How to Build Metal Stud Framing

When it comes to commercial tenant improvements and interior build-outs, precision in framing is everything. At Kubus LLC, we follow the California Building Code (CBC) to ensure each wall assembly is strong, plumb, and ready for the next phase of construction.

Step 1 — Layout and Preparation

Before installing metal studs, we mark wall locations on the concrete floor and ceiling using laser levels and chalk lines. This guarantees proper alignment and code-compliant spacing for doors, electrical conduits, and mechanical systems.

Step 2 — Track Installation

Per CBC Section 2210 and ASTM C754, galvanized steel tracks are securely anchored to the floor and ceiling. We use Hilti or Simpson anchors for concrete substrates, maintaining spacing and embedment depth as specified in the engineer’s drawings.

Step 3 — Stud Placement

Metal studs are inserted into the tracks, spaced typically at 16” or 24” on center, depending on wall type and load requirements. Each stud is plumbed, aligned, and fastened with self-drilling screws per CBC seismic and structural requirements.

Step 4 — Openings and Bracing

Door and window openings are reinforced with structural jamb studs and header tracks, ensuring compliance with CBC’s lateral load standards. Bracing or bridging is added to prevent deflection and improve sound performance.

Step 5 — Insulation and Inspection

Before closing the wall, insulation, fire caulking, and electrical rough-ins are inspected to meet both CBC fire-rating and Title 24 energy efficiency standards.
